For Jake : Longhorn Fans Dominate

Speaking of OSU...

They are getting some heat from Sports Illustrated... Looks like UNC but worse? Who knows if the NCAA will do anything though.

At least T. Boone Pickens is squirming too.

Are you still down in the dumps over Texas Jake? I told you Texas has a good chance to win the Big 12. The talking heads like controversy more than real analysis...

We looked like a football team for that game, but it still doesn't change how awful we were previously - almost losing to fucking Iowa State except for a lucky call.

Also kinda a Phyrric victory as it might have saved Mack's job.

No, phyrric victories are what Georgia had...

A lot of teams lose games they shouldnt or play down. That's the thing with college sports in general. No, Texas is starting to believe and it seems the players are mentality with the coaches. If you got rid of Mack, I'd hazzard you'll be the next USC.

You obviously havent watched many Texas games over the past year and a half. Not being able to tackle with a team comprised of 4-5 star recruits from Texas is not playing down, it is piss poor coaching. There is 0 excuse to not perform when you have the money and recruiting that we do.

Last year, hokies couldn't tackle and a host of other things. Early 2000s there was similar issues. However, is that Bud Foster's or Beamer's fault? No. The kids need to do it and if what coaches are preaching and practicing every week isn't getting through then there is only so much you can do. Not saying there is no accountability on them, especially the Def coordinator, but that's how it goes.

If you expect a national championship every year or even a Big 12 champion appearance, then I can't help you. Parity in college sports has caught up with football which is now more like basketball. SECPN will still try and sell you the brand name teams and "who's the best" arguements of teams and recruits. Reality is that most mid level programs can win any game as long as coaches and players prepare and the players execute.

Unless you shell out huge $$ to bring in someone well known coach and staff, then you run a risk of becoming a USC, Michigan, ND, etc. Big name teams with "high" star recruits who don't do squat most of the time. That's about where you think you are now but I think with a better coordinators you'd be fine and should be happy with a Nat Champ game within the last 10 years. If you look at teams like Florida, who has the top ranked recruiting as well, they don't even make it to the SEC championship.

When muschamp leaves and the defense just magically drops off the next year and continues to get worse every subsequent year, it just might be the coaching. An inability to tackle or have other basic fundamentals is almost always a coaching issue.

There is not that much parity, there are 118 teams or something, and its almost always the exact same ones year in and out who are decent. No excuse for either Texas or Oklahoma to not win the big 12 every year (which is why they have won it the vast majority of times in the conference history, especially since Nebraska failed to adapt to modern era football.

Quote:Reality is that most mid level programs can win any game as long as coaches and players prepare and the players execute.

They can if they catch the other team asleep, to claim mid level programs have the same talent levels of recruits is preposterous. There was a reason Boise State needed every trick play in the book to beat OU when they did (well two reasons, because Oklahoma sucks in bowl games).

Quote:Unless you shell out huge $$ to bring in someone well known coach and staff, then you run a risk of becoming a USC, Michigan, ND, etc. Big name teams with "high" star recruits who don't do squat most of the time.

Notre Dame has had shitty coaching forever, USC was run by a cheater and paid the price for that by suffering in recruiting, and Michigan is a big 10 team and they are jokes (but didn't they beat the hoakies last year? does that qualify as not doing squat?)

Florida also has competition, we don't. But if you admit we need "better coordinators" then you admit there is a coaching problem. And we have 2 national championship games in the last 10 years thanks very much. But there is no reason to be happy with a trip to a non BCS bowl, its unacceptable for a program like ours.

Two years ago when the refs called a incomplete pass on the endzone which was a TD catch. Michigan fans know they should have lost that game. Beating the Hokies in a bowl game isn't that special as we tend to choke and play horrible. That's one of the critic's points about Beamer not taking the Hokies to the next step.

No competition? You had a long 10 win season record which was snapped just like the Hokies. In that time you played various teams that had good programs (TT for a few, Neb for a few, TAM for a few, Kansas for a few, K state for a year I think) who could all compete. Only this year has that pretty much gone away (Baylor is a paper tiger). However, your last sentence is exactly the same argument various Hokie "fans" say about getting rid of Beamer. Fans are never happy about success 8/10 times, they always want the perfection. Nothing wrong with that as a fan however those expectations are just not realistic for football programs whether its because of players, coaches, schedule, or whatever. You want to fire a long time head coach who's done what Mack has done. Go ahead... SECPN loves blood in the water and there is nothing like coaching controversy to boost ratings. I think he needs to look at his coordinator hiring process but that's always tricky.

Except it hasn't been one or two bad seasons. Since McCoy left 4 years ago we have been bad to mediocre despite having a great class. Giving up 550 yards rushing, most in school history, to fucking BYU is not a bump - its unacceptable. Hell, we would have lost to Iowa goddamn State this year had the ref's not been poor.

Macks a good recruiter, but his coaching style has never been that great. They were callign for his head prior to VY as well, then he miraculously got one of the best quarterbacks in NCAA history to head his team, followed by the most accurate passer in NCAA history - after he didn't have a superstar Quarterback we went back once again to not having an identity. Mack's a good recruiter and he is good with dealing with the good old boy Texas politics to keep people donating, but he has always been hands off - and when you losing your good coordinators, his value is becoming less and less.

Expecting more out of big money teams is perfectly justified, like it is being pissed that the Yankees miss the playoffs.

Incidentally, i've been a longhorns fan since 99, in that time very few of those schools you listed were ever very good. We lost to Nebraska in 99 and that was the last time they were decent, and Colorado in 2001 which was the last time they were decent.. Since then the big 12 conference game was won by Texas or OU every single year except 2003 when K-state upset OU.

Aggies weren't good since 98 until they got Johnny Douchebag, and they will go back to perpetual mediocrity until then. Kansas always sucked (probably from Mangino eating all the player's food). For most of those years it was UT and OU top teir, then OSU and Tech as teams you have to watch out for the upset. A&M was after them, but dangerous for us as a rivalrly game, and then there was Baylor who was the big 12 south punching bag.

For a good decade the big 12 north was not remotely good.

Even if we win the big 12 you have to question if giving him $5 million a year is worth it.

We should at least make a play for Saban so Bama will have to shell out $10 million to keep him.

Ahh, my season has been made (almost). Hokies spanking Miami for most of the last decade (sorry ESPN, the U isn't back ever) and resulting in this video.

Warning. Lots of 4 letter language. NFSW.

So is mack leaving or what? Getting a lot of mixed signals... supposedly Alabama offered Saban a contract extension but he hasn't responded to them yet.

He's gone, its just normal politics now.

We won't get Saban unfortunately. His agent is just playing games to get Bama to offer him more money. Given a choice between Austin and fucking Tuscaloosa, 99% of rational human beings would pick the former - but he is quite the good ole boy so he will probably remain.

Screw that. In Alabama you can have sex with anyone, including your own family.

I just argued it would make sense to go, I've never seriously thought it would happen. We'll get someone though, not many more desirable jobs around the country as a coach. As long as they dont hire Kubiak.

That would be awesome, an Aggie as the Head Coach of the Longhorns...

Rumors are we offered Saban 100 million for 10 years and 1% of the network. Would make him the highest paid coach in any sport in the US (and third highest in the world behind a couple of kickball coaches who get paid in pounds and only make more because of the exchange rate).

what does 1% of the network typically equate to? I mean 100 for 10 is pretty steep but seeing as you have a football program that probably brings in more revenues than most NFL teams... And your players are basically non-salaried(stipiend/scholarship/money on the side Smile )

I assume he meant the TV network, the Longhorn Network or whatever the hell it's called. The one quick search I did said that it should make 10-15 million a year, but it's not doing that well evidently. So 1% of 10 million is 100k. It's a drop in the bucket for the 10 million a year he would already be making, but still, 50-100k is 50-100k.

The percentage is ownership so its probably just a form of lump sum pay when he leaves and it gets purchased back. Like having shares in a private company.

Gonna be funny when we make bama top it.

Yeah that was kinda my take on it as well. He's not leaving Alabama, but he's going to get a nice pay raise out of it. I wish I could get a pay raise 8 months after signing a new contract..
