Doesn't ole Rapey have to sit out the first 6 or so regular season games though? That's not gonna be too good for the Steelers. Sorry, Riz, my pop said to hate the Steelers so I have to go with that.....

Jakensama Wrote:1970? Like anyone was actually alive back then. I had been watching the NFL for 4 years by then. That season sucked too. Might be the most boring NFL season ever. The Giants blew a division title to Dallas, there were no division races really. They took the 2 point conversion out of football and there were a shit load of ties all year. That would be the first of 2 straight years the Cowboys would get referee help and steal two Superbowls from the 49ers. The Colts would end up beating them in one of the worst Superbowls ever played. Only 1971 was more boring. That was the first year of the real NFL. Before 1970 it was still AFL vs. NFL. Quite frankly the AFL was so much more fun to watch and by having two leagues they hated each other more. 1970 started a string of boring seasons. Not until the Raiders and Steeler rivalry (74 on) did the league spice up a bit. George Blanda had a great year. The thing I remember most about that season is the Chief/Raider game. The Chiefs had a 17-14 lead and all they needed was a first down to run out the clock. Len Dawson runs for the first down then slides to the turf but Ben Davidson (Raider DT) spears Len Dawson. Otis Taylor and bunch of other Chiefs jump Davidson and huge brawl insues (Which can often be seen on NFL films). The brawl causes off setting penalties which nulifies the Chiefs first down. The Chiefs punt and the Raiders end up tying the game. The Defending World Champs Chiefs miss the playoffs by one game to the Raiders. The Raiders begin a string of 5 straight Championship game loses. The Colts were the best team that year despite playing poorly in the Superbowl.

Unitas was gone by 70 right?
08-09-2010, 12:55 PM
Jakensama Wrote:Unitas was gone by 70 right? No he was there. He hurt his ribs in the Superbowl and couldn't finish the game. I think he played until 71 with the Colts and ended up with the Chargers in 72 then retired. By 1970 Unitas was a liability though. The problem with QB's then is they called there own plays. I like that in general but it can be a problem for an older quarterback. He was calling plays as if he was 26 still and he physically just couldn't pull off the things he used to. He became a turn over machine. Unitas wasn't surrounded by great talent anymore either. They had some young kids (Roy Jeffereson is one I remember) that had speed in 1970 but the days of Mackey and Orr in there prime, Berry, Mattie and Lenny Moore were long gone. The 70 Colts won because of defense. Bubba Smith, Mike Curtis, Ted Hendricks, Billy Ray Smith etc. It was kind of sad that year. The 70 Colts over all were a shell of there former self and still won a world championship. The 68 Colts that lost to Namath was not only the best Colt team ever but that was the best team I personally ever saw until the 76 Raiders came along. All the teams inbetween the 68 Colts and 76 Raiders were subpar. That just goes to show how much 1970 sucked. An over the hill aging shell of its glory days won the Superbowl. Vllad

Best thing about the 70's for me was Walter Payton. Bears sucked that decade, and had one of the worse offensive lines ever. But Sweetness didnt need an offensive line.
I remember when Payton and Franco Harris were in the run for breaking Jim Browns rushing record in the 80's. Franco Harris thought he was the shit, but he had a fucking running offensive line that would just destroy most defenses. When Franco went to Seattle, we saw his true colors. With out the Pittsburgh front line he was mediocre at best. Walter did it with out a front line for most of his career.
