Tv advice!?

burn-in was a big problem when plasma technology was new, but with each generation it becomes less of an issue. I have a 50" Panasonic TH-50PH9UK commercial monitor (not a TV, it has no speakers and no tuner), and if I recall correctly the '9' means it's a 9th-generation panel. I think they're up to 12th or 13th generation now.

I ran the screensaver on it for ~100 hours when it was new, although I probably didn't need to. I did it anyway just to be safe. I've often left the same thing on-screen for long periods (typically games, or Windows Media Player when I have the DJ-bot running) and this does cause some temporary burn-in, but it fades fairly quickly. I think the worst burn-in I ever had (the result of a 14-hour AB/AV marathon in WoW while the panel still had less than 200 hours on it), completely faded after a day or two of running the screensaver.

I will only buy Panasonic plasmas from now on. The last TV I bought (65" panasonic plasma), I tried both a Sony LCD and a Samsung LED, and they just did not look good to me - returned them for the plasma.

As for Bulgy's question, most modern plasmas do not really require run in times, but the very large plasma tend to have recommendations in the manuals of something like 200 hours. I have not run in any of my plasmas and I have had zero problems.

It used to be a bigger problem than it is on newer units, but it can be a problem. I've left my tv on several times though, with the same image each time, and I haven't seen a problem myself.

It used to be a big problem with the older plasmas. I have a friend that has that NBC peacock logo burned in to his 7 year old plasma.

plasma displays are similar to CRTs in that they both generate light by exciting phosphors, causing them to emit photons at specific wavelengths. as a result, they are both subject to burn-in problems caused by "wearing out" the phosphors unevenly. and just like CRTs, newer plasmas are much more resistant to burn-in than older models.

the difference between CRTs and plasma displays is that CRTs work by shooting electrons at the phosphors, which requires a vacuum inside the CRT. plasmas put the phosphors into little glass bubbles filled with some kind of gas, then energize the gas with high voltage. by eliminating the need to make the glass strong enough to safely maintain a vacuum, plasmas can be very large and totally flat.
