2nd Edition is what I know the best as well. I still think it's the best for tabletop. 3rd edition just has too many rules. It's great for programming a game like Neverwinter Nights because you need all those rules for a computer to follow, but it's too many books and shit to keep track of when you're just pen&papering it.
I used to GM and enjoyed it. I don't think I have it in me anymore though.
