a good game needs to let player do what they enjoy and give them enough variety to keep themselves entertained. if you like combat, then you sell your services as a mercenary. people who enjoy RTS's more could contract you for different jobs...the way real questing should work.
Too many fantasy games focus completely on combat instead of the whole setup and circumstances of the combat.
you might need that wood because you are going to use it to construct a basic wood hill fort on the edge of an untamed wilderness, so your faction can hunt faster or have faster access to a rare resource in the area.
