a PS2/PS3/Xbox style controller with Wii-style position/orientation detection and a small keyboard on it would help a lot. the keyboard would of course be too small to 'type' on, but it would be just the right size for your thumbs.
I hear that the current generation of kids are real whizzes at 'thumbing'.
