There is most certainly a middle ground between putting kids in a competitive environment and tossing them out to the wolves or putting them in the thunderdome. I don't think anyone is going to argue that the social problems of kids outside of school in rough areas are positive experiences or that nothing should be done about it - but in the discussion at hand I think that the argument that the competitive and social environments of a school can be a benefit over home school.
