Except it hasn't been one or two bad seasons. Since McCoy left 4 years ago we have been bad to mediocre despite having a great class. Giving up 550 yards rushing, most in school history, to fucking BYU is not a bump - its unacceptable. Hell, we would have lost to Iowa goddamn State this year had the ref's not been poor.
Macks a good recruiter, but his coaching style has never been that great. They were callign for his head prior to VY as well, then he miraculously got one of the best quarterbacks in NCAA history to head his team, followed by the most accurate passer in NCAA history - after he didn't have a superstar Quarterback we went back once again to not having an identity. Mack's a good recruiter and he is good with dealing with the good old boy Texas politics to keep people donating, but he has always been hands off - and when you losing your good coordinators, his value is becoming less and less.
Expecting more out of big money teams is perfectly justified, like it is being pissed that the Yankees miss the playoffs.
Incidentally, i've been a longhorns fan since 99, in that time very few of those schools you listed were ever very good. We lost to Nebraska in 99 and that was the last time they were decent, and Colorado in 2001 which was the last time they were decent.. Since then the big 12 conference game was won by Texas or OU every single year except 2003 when K-state upset OU.
Aggies weren't good since 98 until they got Johnny Douchebag, and they will go back to perpetual mediocrity until then. Kansas always sucked (probably from Mangino eating all the player's food). For most of those years it was UT and OU top teir, then OSU and Tech as teams you have to watch out for the upset. A&M was after them, but dangerous for us as a rivalrly game, and then there was Baylor who was the big 12 south punching bag.
For a good decade the big 12 north was not remotely good.
Even if we win the big 12 you have to question if giving him $5 million a year is worth it.
We should at least make a play for Saban so Bama will have to shell out $10 million to keep him.
