#2 probably tends to be the best because we've got the introductions out of the way and can get straight to the good stuff. #1 can drag sometimes because you always have to start out with some farm boy from Kentucky/Tatooine and it's not until an hour into the movie that the real plot starts.
Why they tend to mess it up after that, I don't get. It's like the writers stop taking it seriously and decide to "just have fun with it" which is probably great fun for writers but tends to suck for audiences.
And then there's the Star Trek "even number" phenomena:
#1 slow/boring/weird
#2 awesome KHAAAAAAN
#3 slow/boring/awkward
#4 awesome. Great script. Book was good too.
#5 dumb. God wants to borrow our spaceship.
#6 awesome. That's the one that started basically with the Enterprise surrendering because they couldn't tell where the photon torpedo came from that hit the ambassador's ship. Several good scenes in this one.
Kinda breaks down after that because I didn't particularly like any of the TNG movies. First Contact wasn't bad I guess. "We draw the line he-ah!" Still...time travelling borg. Duuuumb.
But I digress.
