I am surprised by the Littlefinger love too. The characters have some good and bad qualities to them, however, Martin hasn't put one character into this series that is completely good. The best would be Sansa but even she's a bitch at times... but that comes with being naive little noble girl.
Who knows what Littlefinger will do with her too. Book 6 he just might make her his female Reek with his obsession with her.
I was a bit turned off at first with all of the stuff in the books and then later portrayed by HBO. Then I just looked at it as this world Martin created is primal and brutal. I liken the series to the Conan books rather than LotR. The Conan short stories pushed the limits of sex and brutality in writing at the time. So, I came to realise that Martin's inclusion of this stuff is as a backdrop for a depraved society. Its actually nice change from the Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Vampire whatever fantasy crap that's out there now. I like my fantasy this way... brutal, dirty, and intellectual. However, before I praise Martin too much... he really needs to tie up his work well because it is getting a bit much.
