Re: Ole, Ole Ole Ole! - Slamz - 06-15-2010

Jake just likes anything that involves sweaty young men running around and bumping into each other a lot.

And America doesn't like soccer because we are already so much better than everyone else at so many other things, we just don't see the sense in international sports. We can't even be bothered to set up proper olympic teams for national sports like Basketball. International competitions are just a bore when you already have the biggest collection of bombs and aircraft carriers in the world and therefore could beat any of those countries in the only way that really matters.

Re: Ole, Ole Ole Ole! - Vanraw - 06-15-2010

Ok based on Jakes list.

NFL
College Basketball (specifically March Madness)
College football
Golf
NBA
Boxing

Thats about the only sports I watch.

the rest of the list would be......
Ice Soccer (NHL)
Poker
Soccer
MMA
Reality TV
Mexican Game Shows
Infomercials
Oprah
the view
The ellen show
Fox News
Wrestling
NASCAR
Baseball - Is dead to me since they let roid cheaters knowingly take over record from people who never cheated (Hank Aaron).

Re: Ole, Ole Ole Ole! - Breand - 06-16-2010

to say no baseball players EVER cheated before steroids is kinda silly. What about all the dudes taking speed in the 70s and 80s? (as well as snorting coke) Every generation cheats, they just use different methods to do it.

Re: Ole, Ole Ole Ole! - Jakensama - 06-16-2010

Shoeless Joe Jackson was framed!

There are lots of HOF pitchers who have admitted to cheating for ball doctoring - gaylord perry, whitey ford, dan sutton.

I actually don't care that much about roids. Anyone who has ever been a pitcher knows how much it destorys your arm, roids keep them from injuries.

Hell, the modern nutrition and training routines and technologies we have today give new players huge advantage over the old numbers, but no one whines about that.

Cheating exists in every sport - always has, always will.

Dock Ellis threw a no hitter on acid, but I'm not sure that was cheating... really it just makes it more impressive.

Quote:In 1961, during his home run race with Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle developed a sudden abscess that kept him on the bench. It came from an infected needle used by Max Jacobson, a quack who injected Mantle with a home-brew containing steroids and speed. In his autobiography, Hank Aaron admitted once taking an amphetamine tablet during a game. The Pirates' John Milner testified at a drug dealer's trial that his teammate, Willie Mays, kept "red juice," a liquid form of speed, in his locker. (Mays denied it.) After he retired, Sandy Koufax admitted the he was often "half high" on the mound from the drugs he took for his ailing left arm.

For decades, baseball beat writers - the Hall of Fame's designated electoral college - shielded the players from scrutiny. When the Internet (and exposés by two former ballplayers, Jim Bouton and Jose Canseco) allowed fans to see what was really happening, the baseball writers were revealed as dupes or stooges. In a rage, they formed a posse to drive the drug users out of the game.

Re: Ole, Ole Ole Ole! - Vllad - 06-16-2010

Jake's list while it has a criteria is still full of oxy morons.

While you may like College football over the NFL we aren't talking about leagues we are talking about the sports themselves. American football is football whether it is High School, College, Arena or the NFL.

I find it hard to believe that any reasonable American would claim Soccer is more exciting then American Football. Sure there are some knuckleheads out there that just say that because they wished Soccer were more popular. They don't say it because it is actually true.

Poker isn't a sport it is a game. That isn't to say it isn't more exciting then Soccer but games don't qualify in this discussion. If you are going to list games then you might as well put WoW on your list.

That list was posted as a joke.. Although I would say that Arenal football and NFL are completely different sports (college and NFL are different too but not significantly enough to say they are different sports).

I know lots of reasonable Americans that say Soccer is more exciting than American Football. They certainly aren't the majority because it isn't the game we grow up watching, but its not inherently more boring than live american football - which with the pauses many people find dreadful. If you go to a NFL game live and see the dozens of TV enforced breaks, many people find live games horribly boring. I'm sure college games could be boring live if one wasn't a fan and too drunk to see while at them, but I have never actually been at a college game in either of those capacities. Every Texas game was after 4 hours of tailgating and with several flasks smuggled in...

I'm saying this as someone who still finds soccer more boring than baseball or college football or college basketball (although I might find premiership soccer games more entertaining than NFL or NBA), so I certainly don't find it the best thing since sliced bread - but it certainly isn't inherently more boring than many American sports that 95% of the world would find far more boring... You like what you grow up with or experience a lot of, bottom line.

I've been to plenty of pro and college games, and probably hundreds of high school and youth games. When you put the difference between soccer and football in this context Jake, suddenly it's not the Americans who seem to have ADD. Seriously, if you need to see a ball in constant motion for a game to be entertaining, even if it's just being kicked back and forth between a couple of players jogging around the pitch then, yeah, having to wait 25 seconds between plays must be excruciating.

I get the point though, to each his/her own.

Re: Ole, Ole Ole Ole! - Jakensama - 06-16-2010

ADD is not being able to pay attention to one thing for a long period of time. Getting annoyed of constant artificial stoppages (as opposed to the natural stoppages in football) in play is not ADD, it is common sense. You will notice how my favorite sport is college football.

I don't even put this as the difference between soccer and american football, it is the difference between NFL and college football. I had Texans tickets and the games were dreadfully boring (and not just because the Texans suck) whereas I had plenty of fun at other levels of football. The only mitigating factor was that they had a good bloody mary bar where you could make your own bloody mary with all kinds of fixings, and if you smuggled in a flask of vodka you could just go back 5 times and get your sunday morning breakfast well done.

NFL tv time outs have gotten out of control, and no one who isn't a hard core NFL fan would say otherwise. NFL is good at a bar because you don't care about the time outs when you are bullshitting with friends and getting drunk. Live it blows. (and, as said before, it's overtime rules are worse than a tie).

Re: Ole, Ole Ole Ole! - Jakensama - 06-16-2010

Actually NFL is perfect for ADD people, you can sit and watch 30 seconds of action, and then talk to your frends or throw your round of darts, and then watch the next play, and then go to the jukebox and play a couple songs, then watch the next play, order a round of drinks, then watch the next play, hit on the girl next to you, watch the next play - sweet half time lets go to the parking lot and do a J..

Can't do that with soccer..

God I miss America.

Re: Ole, Ole Ole Ole! - Moristans - 06-16-2010

Well, maybe at the end of the day, that's the appeal but I suppose we can go back and forth forever.

I haven't honestly been to a pro game since the Raiders left LA. Maybe it's gotten worse since then. For the same reasons you mentioned, JC football is probably my favorite level, college rules without big time TV. My school has people from USC and UCLA so there are always tickets to those games floating around, UCLA moreso than USC for obvious reasons, but I stilll love watching two good JC teams go at it for a tenth of the price.

Doesn't matter though, I find all levels of American football more interesting than any level of soccer. It's not the skill, it's the game.

Come home Jake...

Re: Ole, Ole Ole Ole! - Jakensama - 06-16-2010

Hopefully for you you aren't a USC fan, you won't be seeing them do much for the next couple years... a shame we didn't go to the pac-16 so Texas could beat up on west coast teams annually but cest la vive.

I get to spend 6 weeks in New York setting up the new branch starting in august, so I will at least get to have a trip down to see the horns play for once instead of selling my season tickets off like always. Why oh why did I buy a home in the europe..

Re: Ole, Ole Ole Ole! - Moristans - 06-16-2010

Quote:Luckily for you you aren't a USC fan, you won't be seeing them do much for the next couple years...

No, I'm an SC fan, bigtime. I worked the Jedi mindtrick on my GF to get her to pick SC for her graduate program with visions of season tickets in my head. Yes, I'm a big enough fan not to have been put off by shake-up in the coaching ranks. It's going to be a long two years.

That would have been...interesting.

Agreed. I may be a hard-core soccer fan, but damned if that didn't make me laugh.

Re: Ole, Ole Ole Ole! - Jakensama - 06-25-2010

World Cup turns out to be like WW2. The French surrender early, usa arrives at the last minute and the Brits are left to fight the Germans...

The England Team went to visit an orphanage in South Africa this morning. "It's so good to put a smile on the faces of people with no hope, constantly struggling and facing the impossible" said Jamal Umboto, aged six.

Apparently all England games are now being shown on the adult gay channel. The sight of 11 asseholes getting hammered for 90 minutes is to much for normal TV.

No sign of the Soviets (unless you count Slovakia), but the US is still ontrack to meet the Japs in the final..

(wouldn't surprise me, after some of the results so far)

In the first post of the thread I talked about England taking out the yanks, the krauts, and the argies, and funnily enough that's who we'll face in the first three rounds (assuming we and Argentina get past the next round). Of course, we didn't really stomp the yanks (due to that defective ball), but we could still get a chance to finish the job in the final...

Re: Ole, Ole Ole Ole! - Jakensama - 06-25-2010

Pshaw, couldn't even get first in the division SUN so eloquently labeled:

And if we didn't have FIFA conspiring against us to steal goals in 2 seperate games, we'd be ahead in points and even more in total goals/differential!

Good shot with the krauts though, they are pretty young and not having Ballack is big.

Plus we have a great incentive to make that old has-been eat his words.

Re: Ole, Ole Ole Ole! - Jakensama - 06-25-2010

You should win really, Germany is more talented but too young and they don't have any good pikey thugs like Terry or Rooney - and sometimes you just need degenerate white trash thugs to rough your way to victory.

Terrys my favorite, I like how his mother got caught shoplifting from tesco and his dad got caught selling coke at a bar... Mate, you make like 300 thousand quid a week, give your parents a couple bucks.
