Re: Netflix - Vanraw - 09-29-2011

I think HP and Netflix board should get together for a group discount frontal lobotomy..... Its like Coke changing the recipe all over again....

I do think that Netflix is going to be part of the TV watching future no matter what, but there is noway they are going to have an unfettered non competitive market.

If the market pops so will they, and perhaps they will do some sort of positive announcement like game rental, or streaming movie rentals or purchase process like Amazon and Block buster / Itunes has.

They already announced that Quickster is going to have video game rentals at no extra charge.

Re: Netflix - Slamz - 09-29-2011

I expect the lift to occur when Netflix announces whatever deal they have in their pocket regarding streaming. They hinted that streaming selection would be greatly improved soon, but there have been no details.

A good enough bit of news there and I think they'll take off again.

Re: Netflix - Grieve - 09-29-2011

Well, they announced the Dreamworks animation deal, but that doesn't kick in until 2013.

Re: Netflix - Grieve - 10-07-2011

Netflix just got "The Walking Dead", which is pretty cool. Includes the upcoming season 2.

Re: Netflix - Grieve - 10-10-2011

Aaaand...they just dumped the whole Quickster idea...stock up 11% in premarket.

Well with Mad Men and Breaking Bad they now have 3 shows worth watching Wink

Re: Netflix - Grieve - 10-10-2011

I like it because they have a bunch of Brit shows that make me fondly remember "the old country". Plenty of good new stuff (e.g. Sherlock) and old (e.g. Fawlty Towers, The Office (original and better version), Red Dwarf, Monty Python, A Bit of Fry & Laurie, House of Cards, etc).

They also have plenty of old sci-fi/genre stuff like Firefly, BSG, Twin Peaks, X-Files, etc. And tons of kid shows to keep the sprogs happy.

Re: Netflix - Jakensama - 10-10-2011

I was annoyed at Fawltey towers on Netflix when I streamed an episode of it at a friends house and they had censored one of the Majors charmingly PC moments..

Re: Netflix - Grieve - 10-10-2011

Wow, that surprises me...the HBO/Starz TV shows on there certainly aren't censored. If I had to guess I'd say that the BBC censored the episodes before they sold them to Netflix. Very sad - book burning is coming next! Ray Bradbury was right!

Re: Netflix - Jakensama - 10-10-2011

Do they have father Ted on netflix?

Re: Netflix - Grieve - 10-10-2011

Yep, but only on DVD.

Other streaming shows are BlackAdder...The Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy...lots of good stuff.

Bat shit crazy.... its new coke all over again.

The good thing is they came around, and admitted it was a bad move.....

Now if HP will just deal with their stupid move.....

Re: Netflix - Slamz - 10-10-2011

"New Coke" was what I thought, too. The whole Quikster concept made no sense. I don't know if I'm glad that they changed their mind or worried that their idea was so flimsy and terrible to begin with that a little public pressure was all it took to reverse it.

My Netflix is still down 15% from where I bought it but long term I still think it'll recover to its old glory. Once people get over the sticker shock, they'll realize that Netflix is still the only show in town for streaming.

They have tons of foreign films on streaming. Lots as Thai/Korean/Chinese movies, some of which are quite good. Watched "Little Big Soldier" last night -- Jackie Chan movie from 2010. Pretty good. Next up: "The Man From Nowhere". 5 star user rating. Korean. If you like Asian action movies, there are lots on streaming.

(Although if you're not familiar with Asian action films, I can safely warn you that Asians do not believe in happy endings, like...ever.)

Re: Netflix - Vanraw - 10-10-2011

Just watched a piece on CNBC, and they are saying one of the issues, netfkix would announce they now had x streaming ability, and the stock would go up, but they were not talking about the cost of content. That sounds like where the street concern is.

As Kramer said, when asked if the move today changed his view. He said, Netflix is a broken stock, and a broken company.

Re: Netflix - Grieve - 10-10-2011

Yeesh, after the initial pop, Netflix got murdered again today. The shorts are totally in control.

However...at some point there is going to be the mother of all short squeezes. And I agree with Slamz, I think it will eventually recover it's former glories (or get bought).

Re: Netflix - Grieve - 10-11-2011

Down again today. I couldn't resist it - I bought another bullish option spread today (Jan 2012 $120/$130).

Re: Netflix - Grieve - 10-24-2011

Oh man...I've really learnt my lesson with Netflix...never try to catch a falling knife.

They beat expectations handily this quarter, but next quarter guidance is horrible. EPS range of $0.36-0.70 against estimates of $1.09 - yikes! And about $50-80m lower on revenue.

Stock is down 21% after hours...

Re: Netflix - Breand - 10-24-2011

they've destroyed their brand, and by splitting the prices in two, they are now selling two worthless services. Together they complement each other, separate, it is pointless. and all the TV stuff you can find for "free" in other places.

Re: Netflix - Grieve - 10-24-2011

They dumped plans to separate the services a while back. And some of the TV stuff you can find for free elsewhere, but the average person can't get in on their big screen TV in any easy way. That's the big benefit of Netflix - their software is in a zillion blu-ray players, game systems, settop boxes, Apple TV, etc. You don't need to download stuff to your computer and stream it.

However...the bad publicity obviously hit them way worse than expected, and they are losing a lot of subscribers. Plus they just announced they are expanding into the UK, which is going to cost a lot of money in advertising and marketing. So the stock is probably dead for the foreseeable future (I'm assuming my call spreads are now worthless).

Still...if it drops to $50-60 I might get back in. Can't resist those falling knives. Smile

Re: Netflix - Slamz - 10-25-2011

Amazon buys Netflix in 3....2.....

Well maybe not. But their stock certainly took a dive.

The interesting thing to me is that Netflix streaming has a fantastic number of foreign films. I've seen more foreign films in the last year than I think I have during all previous years of my life. French movies, Norweigan movies, all sorts of movies out of Asia, and plenty of them have been great, if you don't mind the subtitles. I can only imagine that the problem with streaming is that American studios will not play ball. They're still milking DVD sales.

If Netflix can somehow swing a big movie streaming deal with a major American studio, I think we'd see their business turn right around. I think that's exactly what they want and they intend to dump DVD entirely if they can. The fact that they split it off still leads me to believe they have some sort of done deal in the works for streaming and we'll be hearing about it Soon™.

And maybe the reason they did the split before the deal is to troll the market for a buyer. I'm sure Apple could buy them outright if they wanted.

Re: Netflix - Grieve - 10-25-2011

The problem is that Netflix doesn't have the money or clout to make the studios play ball. Amazon or Apple or Microsoft certainly do. And any of those could buy Netflix without breaking a sweat (especially now the market cap has plummeted to $4 billion).

However...they could also just make those deals themselves, without Netflix. What they would get from netflix is a large subscriber base and the installed hardware base.

We'll see - at this rate they may just wait to pick them up in bankruptcy court. Smile

Re: Netflix - Grieve - 10-25-2011

Wow, now Amazon missed bigtime. Apple....NetFlix...Amazon...all the momentum faves are letting down Wall St.

Amazon was down as much as 15%, now just 10%.

Re: Netflix - Slamz - 10-25-2011

That's a possibility -- I could see Amazon beating them if they decided to, which, with the Kindle Fire coming out next month, they might decide to do. I was just looking at Amazon's list of supported hardware (what you can stream to) and it's huge. Lots of Blu-Ray players, newer TVs, all the Tivo boxes, the Roku boxes, etc. No direct support for consoles, though, which is pretty big. So buying Netflix would get them that, plus all the deals Netflix apparently has for streaming foreign films.

And Netflix's website is FAR superior for browsing. If anyone buys them, they better keep that. This is one thing I think Netflix has thoroughly beaten everyone else at. ("Oh you like dark-action-comedy-space-adventure movies? Then you might like these!") Amazon's ability to let you browse for movies is awful.

I don't think Apple is anywhere when it comes to streaming video to your TV though, at least not without Apple hardware. That will keep them out of the market for a good while even if they decide to start. I have a hard time envisioning Apple streaming through someone else's hardware.

Really if Netflix doesn't announce something big by the end of the year then I'm going to declare that they are just morons and ruined their business for no reason.

Re: Netflix - Vanraw - 10-25-2011

Well I for one, think they are morons.

However, there could have been something in the works. Perhaps they had a deal, and it fell through.

If I was running the thing, I would land a pay to rent stream video, like block buster and zune have. Just do it as a value added service.

I could see Google, microsoft, or amazon buying them. I can't see apple doing it, unless they want to change their hardware monopoly philosophy. Doesn't seem to fit.
